Vancouver targeted for RHD expansion in NW Pacific region. With the North West Pacific rim continuing to be an important region for custom and semi-custom yacht building, Ron Holland Design is currently examining a number of options with a view to establishing a presence there from the beginning of 2011.
Ron comments: " We are experiencing a healthy level of interest by way of new project enquiries for both sail and power. Our initial thinking is that Vancouver with its excellent connections, a vibrant business community and a great harbour, is the most obvious location for an additional Ron Holland Design office. Over the coming months we will be refining and testing the business case and developing the details. All things being equal, we would like to establish a presence in Vancouver early in the New Year. "
Holland went on to note that his design collaborations with Crescent Custom Yachts and Platinum Marine over the past two years have underscored the importance and potential of the Pacific NW region for his design business. Further endorsement for the strategy has come in the form of extremely positive feedback from presentations given at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club.
"The studio in Kinsale, in Ireland remains the principal base for RHD, " adds Holland, " but there can be no doubt that our new Vancouver projects will benefit significantly from the proposed local area service and support. "

Burrasca crosses Melek going out of Viareggio

Melek, the latest launching from Perini Navi, completed sailing trials during the last week of August. It was a fun coincidence that, as Melek pulled out of Viareggio harbour, we passed Burrasca. Melek and Burrasca span a seven year period for the Perini Navi 56 metre series.
In 2001, when Perini invited Ron Holland Design to collaborate with them on the new 56 metre aluminium ketch design, announcing plans to build two or three yachts, I thought that this was a commercially ambitious program. Burrasca was so successful that the production of this design has continued and, eight years later, Melek is the ninth of the series to be delivered, with the tenth already at an advanced stage of production.
Melek incorporates the latest technology from Perini Navi. This includes a fresh development of the exterior styling as well as new details for engineering, services and sail handling systems. Her interior arrangement has created a spacious and practical environment with the joinery detailing to the wonderful level of craftsmanship that Perini are renowned for.
Melek is another great example of a performance oriented long distance cruising yacht by Perini.

Bill Barton, original Imp crew member and author of "The Legend of Imp" is in Ireland competing in the Etchells World Championships.
At our invitation, Bill presented the Imp story to Kinsale Yacht Club members, including George Radley, the present owner of Imp and his crew.
Bill's book is more than a great story about my special design. It's a comment on the sailing and ocean racing scene of the Seventies. A great read !

Discovery Yachts will present two new Ron Holland yachts at the Southampton Boat Show in September. Both the new Discovery 55 and Discovery 67 have been completed just in time for this important European "in water" show.
Discovery Yachts, with a healthy order book, are now considered yacht builders of the highest quality and continued to gain orders and credibility even in the recent difficult market conditions.
I took these photos last week during a visit to Discovery Yachts to discuss the next Ron Holland design collaboration with this progressive production yacht builder.
